The game
Fjordsaga is a persistent multiplayer game: the world keeps running when nobody is logged in. Construction, resource production and marches run in real time. Sessions are designed to last five to fifteen minutes, several times a day.
Each village grows across twelve buildings, including War Camp, Shipyard, Temple, Trading Post and Rune Forge. Besides wood, stone and food there is divine favor, which the temple produces and which is needed for blessings and special units. Once a player has earned enough renown, their Jarl, the hero of the village, can subjugate other villages and so win a second village.
Three gods, three play styles
When founding a village, every player devotes it to one god. The choice holds for that village and shapes how you play.
Thor
The Redbeard, path of war
More attack strength and loot on raids. Unlocks the Berserker.
Odin
The Allfather, path of knowledge
Raids without random spread in the target's defense, fast scouts. Unlocks the Raven Archer.
Freya
The Vanir, path of prosperity
Higher resource production and faster recruitment. Unlocks the Valkyrie.
Taking on the world bosses together
Clans
Players join one clan per world, with a leader, deputies and members. Through tribute from its members, the clan rises in clan level and unlocks further content, for example expeditions up to the Vinland voyage.
World bosses and world end
Mighty NPC enemies that no single village can defeat challenge the clans. A world ends when, for example, a clan has defeated all world bosses (currently ten) or controls 80 percent of the player villages. The winners are then recorded in the Hall of Fame.
Every world has its own game speed and its own end. Afterwards, a new saga begins.
Getting started and convenience
New players are guided through their first steps by the Viking Rite checklist. A Village Manager works through construction orders, an attack alarm warns by browser signal or e-mail, and a limited vacation mode protects villages while you are away. Through a referral program players can invite friends: once an invited player has confirmed their e-mail and finished the Viking Rite, both receive Bernstein (with a cap per player).
Business model
Fjordsaga is free. Additional features such as convenience tools can be unlocked with the premium currency Bernstein, which can be bought or, to a limited extent, earned in the game. The explicit goal is no hard pay-to-win: players who do not pay should still be able to keep up.
Technology
The server is written in TypeScript (Fastify, PostgreSQL, WebSockets), the interface in React. Game state is computed on access from timestamps rather than simulated continuously.
